⌘ Étymologies et toponymes

Pelleautier, en vivaro-alpin Pelautier, est une paroisse attestée dès 1080 sous l'appellation latine Ecclesia de Monte Lauterio. Ce toponyme se retrouve en 1288 sous la forme latine Castrum de Podio Lauterio, et y signale par là-même la présence d'un château. C'est en 1493 que nous retrouvons une forme proche du toponyme actuel.

Si Podio signifie podium en latin, il signifie aussi petite éminence. Nous retrouvons toujours cette éminence - 1128m - proche du village et s'appelant maintenant Lautier.
