L'immense majorité des toponymes de Cruguel datent des temps les plus anciens, parfois du néolithique ou de la période préceltique, notamment les oronymes et hydronymes.

Cruguel, en breton Krugell, signifie tumulus, tertre funéraire.

Nous retrouvons les formes toponymiques anciennes Kreugel, parrochia en 1258 dans les documents subsistant de l'Abbaye de Lanvaux puis, en 1387, une forme Creuguell précédée d'un Cleuguell en 1330, tous les deux dans les archives du Chapitre de Vannes. Si 1427 nous offre un Creuguel, 1446, 1516, 1536, 1815 et dates postérieures ne nous livrent plus que des Cruguel.

Le terme Krugell est toujours usité avec un sens identique. Il peut aussi se composer pour former des termes comme Krugell-Verien = fourmilière ou Krugell an Oadoù = la pyramide des âges...
