L'immense majorité des toponymes de Marzan datent des temps les plus anciens, parfois du néolithique ou de la période préceltique, notamment les oronymes et hydronymes.

Le Marzen breton et Marzaun gallo sont devenu ce Marzan en français. Attesté en 895 dans le Cartulaire de l'abbaye de Redon sous la forme Marsin, plebs faisant référence à Saint Martin de Vertou, Marzan voit plusieurs formes anciennes dont Marsen dans les archives du Chapitre de Vannes en 1387.

Signalons aussi les Marsen de 1257, 1307, 1387 ; les Marzen de 1267, 1270, 1427, 1448, 1450, 143, 1464, 1477, 1481, 1514, 1669 et 1731. Il nous faut aussi remarquer le Mouzin de 1630 et Mauzin de 1654.

Martin - Marzhin en breton, est prononcé marzine dans cette langue et est toujours un nom de famille breton.

Après avoir évangélisé le nord Poitou et la Bretagne occidentale sud alors qu'il n'était pas encore prêtre, Martin de Vertou parti en pèlerinage à Rome pour mieux revenir dans sa région natale, le pays nantais, et y continuer son œuvre évangélique.
