L'immense majorité des toponymes de Le Sourn datent des temps les plus anciens, parfois du néolithique ou de la période préceltique, notamment les oronymes et hydronymes.

Ils sont aussi légions à avoir été créés lors des grands défrichements qui ont fait naître nos paysages, nos hameaux, nos villages et communes actuelles. Images de l'Histoire, de ses hommes et de leurs langues, plusieurs strates linguistiques y sont visibles.

⌘ Étymologies et toponymes

Le Sourn, en breton Ar Sorn, est attesté en 1814 sous la forme Sournes, puis Les Sournes en 1847. Si l'année 1718, première forme ancienne attestée, nous présente un Le Sourne en 1718, l'année 1739 nous offrira un Le Sorne puis un Le Sorn en 1815 que nous retrouvons en 1850 avec un Le Sournes. Les cartes des Cassini nous donnent un Le Sorn.

Ce toponyme dérive probablement du breton Sorn = plateau rocheux, terme toujours utilisé en breton mais à usage maritime et que l'on retrouve employé en Baie de Morlaix - entre autre. Un autre usage de ce mot Sorn l'est pour définir la glace et cet usage est attesté en 1659.

La géomorphologie des lieux avec ses nombreux affleurements rocheux nous ferait pencher pour ce Sorn = plateau rocheux.
