Nivillac, en breton Nivilieg et Nivilha gallo, est attesté en 1063 pour la première fois connue dans le cartulaire de Redon ; nous y voyons un Nuilac, Plebs, puis sous la forme Niviliac en 1395, ceci dans les archives de la sénéchaussée de la Roche-Bernard. L'année 1287 nous présente un Nivillac puis un Nivilliac en 1429 suivi d'un Nevillac en 1636.

Comme Neuillac, Nivillac dériverait du breton insulaire Novios = nouveau devenu nevez en breton contemporain. Nivilieg - Nivillac pourrait, en son temps, avoir été une ville nouvelle par rapport à un habitat plus ancien situé dans la région.
