Construit par François de Bonne, le futur Duc de Lesdiguières, vers 1580, ce château fut une des résidences de Lesdiguières où Louis XII passa une nuit lors de son voyage dans la région. Ce château étant résidence et non place-forte, la finesse des murs ne pouvait résister aux feux d'artillerie ni à un siège en règle. La structure imposante de l'édifice était un outil de propagande affirmant la puissance de son possesseur.
