La Fare-en-Champsaur, en gavot La Fara, est attesté pour la première fois connue en 1180 dans le Cartulaire Ulciensis sous sa forme occitane. Nous le retrouvons en 1183 dans une bulle de Lucien III° à l'abbaye de l'Île-Barbe.

Selon Ernest Nègre, La Fare signifierait ruines d'habitations, selon d'autres, ce mot signifierait famille et dériverait du germanique Fara = famille d'après Ernst Koelher. La Fare est un des hameaux de La Fare-en-Champsaur.
