L'immense majorité des toponymes de Châtenay - 01 datent des temps les plus anciens, parfois du néolithique ou de la période préceltique, notamment les oronymes et hydronymes.

⌘ Étymologies et toponymes

Châtenay, idem en arpitan, est pour la première fois attesté dans les écrits en 1143 avec un Mansus de Castaneto rappelant l'existence d'un domaine agricole de petite taille voyant terres, habitation et présence d'une châtaigneraie signalée par ce révélateur Castaneto - les châtaignes étaient aliments. Ce premier toponyme se retrouve en 1212 avec un Chastanet dans le cartulaire du Lyonnais puis un Chastaneis dans les titres des Feuillets en 1249. Le pouillé de Lyon nous apporte un Chatenay en 1492 puis les visites pastorales nosu offrent un Chastenay en 1743 puis, le pouillé de Lyon, un Chatenay-les-Dombes en 1743.

Ce Châtenay n'a - comme nous avons pu le lire, aucun rapport avec un château mais un lien direct avec les châtaignes qui, par leur abondance et usages multiples, jouaient rôle important dans l'alimentation humaine.
