Bangor - Bangor en breton, est formé du préfixe Ban- que l'on retrouve aussi dans des toponymes comme Bangâvres - commune de Gâvres, près de Lorient.

Bangor, suivant Hervé Abalain et Léon Fleuriot, serait formé du radical Ban- signifiant supérieur, suprême et Gor - troupe. Il est usuellement donné le sens de Monastère à Bangor.

La présence de ce toponyme s'expliquerait par la colonisation et christianisation de l'île par des bretons insulaire originaires de Cambrie au V° et VI° siècle, période où le monastère de Bangor is y Coet - Bangor on Dee, pays de Galles - avait belle notoriété ; à titre anecdotique, ce monastère, probablement construit en bois, fut détruit vers 616 par les angles de Northumbrie après la bataille de Chester perdue par les Gallois. Il ne reste aucune trace du bâtiment.

Les Cartes des Cassini, datées de 1787, nous présentent toponyme identique.
