Bâgé-la-Ville se retrouve dans les chartes de Cluny entre les années 1004-1019 sous leurs formes latines dans les expressions Balbiacus et in villa balgiaco.

Comme beaucoup de toponymes de la région, Bâgé-la-Ville doit son appellation à une villa gallo-romaine dont le propriétaire devait être un certain Balgiacus qui au fil des siècles deviendra ce Bâgé que nous connaissons actuellement.

La composition du toponyme avec un La Ville permet de différencier cette commune de Bâgé-le-Châtel qui n'est guère éloignée de ce point.
