Réotier, idem en occitan, est connu dans les écrits dès la fin du XII° siècle, siècle où ce toponyme se retrouve dans le cartulaire de l’Abbaye de Boscodon avec un Mons Reorterius. En 1202, la présence du château est soulignée avec un Castrum Reoterio.

D’après Ernest Nègre, Réotier serait un lieu où poussait aisément des saules ou autre plants produisant des tiges souples permettant la vannerie.
