La mer, sombre amoureuse, éprise des sanglots
Des rocs, baignés dans l'ocre au baiser des falots...
Et sur l'eau calme
Dans le double peigne extensible des palmes,
Une barque s'enfuit, aile pliée, ainsi
Qu'un oiseau mort qui dérive dans l'infini ;
Mais l'on discerne
L'insecte batelier, ramant à gestes ternes.
Prières du Maghreb, dont les notes, métaux,
Heurtent le ciel, tombent aux facettes des eaux,
Et rejaillissent,
Et fuient dans l'ombre, où les grands silences les vissent.
Rumeurs d' « aoudhs » : vibrations de voix d'amants ;
Lourds appels répétés par les miroirs dormants...
Et des nuages
Au ventre de lumière espèrent d'autres plages.
Les regards des fanaux se sont posés sur l'onde
Et désormais trouent seuls du noir pétri de bleu ;
Un nouveau monde
Surgit du calme immense, et de l'ombre et du feu.
Soirs insondables !
Soirs angoissés !
Pas de ciel : un drap noir piqué d'yeux innombrables ;
Plus de mer, jais liquide où nagent des clartés ;
... Plus d'hommes, plus de Dieux, plus rien que le Silence
Et les relents d'Amour qui montent de Byzance...
