Rabou, Rabòu en vivaro-alpin, semble désigner un endroit escarpé, une gorge ou un ravin ; la topologie du terrain avec ses toutes proches gorges du petit Büech semble confirmer l'interprétation de ce toponyme.

Nous retrouvons ce toponyme dans le Cartulaire du Monastère de Durbon en 1188 sous la forme Rabaorum, puis en 1220 dans le même document, sous la forme Rabaons, puis Rabaonum en 1232.
