Napoléon, comme tout souverain, fréquentait bals et soirées organisées et y était hôte de marque. Ces moments sont toujours favorables et permettent aux citoyens sélectionnés de parler à leur souverain qui en profite pour travailler son image de marque.

En ce début de règne, la ville de Paris organisa un bal en l'honneur de l'Empereur ; le tout-Paris qui compte y était invité. Parmi ces gens, une jeune femme de la classe marchande à qui l'Empereur s'adressa et à qui il posa plusieurs questions. S'enquérant de l'activité de son mari, elle lui répondit qu'il faisait dans les draps. L'Empereur eut un petit sourire et continua sa tournée bises et poignées de main.

Deux ans plus tard, assistant à une autre fête en la ville de Paris, il accosta la même dame sans s'en souvenir aucunement et lui posa identiques questions. Notre brave dame lui répondit qu'il lui avait déja posé ces questions et qu'elle lui avait répondu que son mari faisait dans les draps, mais qu'il était mort peu de temps après sa rencontre avec l'Empereur.

- Vous êtes donc veuve ? dit alors l'Empereur.
- Non, Sire, répondit la dame, je me suis remariée depuis.

- Et que fait donc votre mari ? demande alors Napoléon.

- Sire, il fait dans les vases !
- Celui-ci est du moins plus propre que l'autre, lui répondit alors l'Empereur en s'éloignant avec sourire fripon.
