Gemitus cegri.

Quand j'ai vu le soleil se coueher sous les chênes,
La mer à l'orient assombrir ses flots bleus,
Les phares s'allumer dans les îles lointaines,
Je regagne mon toit, calme et presque joyeux.

C'est une goutte d'eau sur ma lèvre brûlante,
Un éclair de plaisir dans mes longues douleurs,
Car celui qui n'a rien de bien peu se contente,
Et les fleurs du désert sont les plus douces fleurs.

Je souffre, et ma tristesse est amère et profonde ;
Mais tant d'autres meilleurs ont souffert avant moi,
Qui, courbés sous la croix, ont traversé le monde
Sans jamais, ô mon Dieu, vous demander pourquoi !
