Pierre Abélard est un théologien, philosophe et compositeur breton; la Bretagne est alors indépendante. Cet homme de lettres, impulsant un renouveau théologique par ses travaux, suscite l'ire des autorités écclésiastiques qui le condamnent pour hérésie lors du Concile de Soissons en 1121; puis confirment cette condamnation lors du concile de Sens en 1140. Si ses travaux sont en grande partie oubliés du plus grand nombre, son amour avec Héloise et les lettres du couple sont restées. Héloise et Abélard sont enterrés au cimetière du Père Lachaise à Paris.
