Josselin, en breton Josilin et Joçlign en gallo, est attesté en 1080 dans le cartulaire de Redon qui - Castrum et castellum de Goscelini - signale par celà l'existence du château et de la place forte. Nous retrouvons en 1129 la même appellation - Castellanum Joscelini - dans les archives du Prieuré de Saint-Martin situé à Josselin même ; ce même prieuré qui nous fait connaître un Castrum Guoscelini en 1129 puis un Castellanum Jocelini toujours au XII° siècle.

Josselin est le nom de celui qui bâtit le château du même nom. Ce Josselin était un des fils de Guethénoc, comte du Poher, ayant vécu de l'an 998 à l'an 1040.
