En breton, nous écrivons Hillion qu'avec un seul L ; soit Hilion.

C'est au XI° siècle que nous retrouvons ce toponyme dans les écrits. Les années et siècles suivant verront un Hilium pour l'an 1148 ; un Hyllion pour l'an 1216. Les formes retrouvée ultérieurement resteront proches et ce toponyme verra une stabilité à travers les âges.

Excluant les hypothèses farfelues, plusieurs voies s'affrontent pour expliquer ce toponyme ; aucune ne pouvant étayer leur argument de documents tangibles, nous devons donc les classer à niveau identique.

Certains feront dériver ce nom de lieu d'un anthroponyme gallois, moine ou, peut-être plus probable, d'un pentiern ayant laissé son nom à ce lieu.

Une autre voie ferait dériver ce nom d'un mot gallois Hilion = progéniture. Cette hypothèse, voyant alors un clan, gallois ou breton, se démarquer du voisinage avec ce rappel clanique. Nous pourrons remarquer que ce mot Hil = race est, ou fut, aussi employé en breton comme le rapporte un locuteur de Plonevez-Kerne.
