Un arrêt de la cour d'appel de Paris du 20 décembre 1949 spécifie que les armoiries sont des marques de reconnaissance accessoires du nom de famille auquel elles se rattachent indissolublement. Les armoiries obéissent aux même lois que le nom de famille et sont donc transmissibles à ses enfants.

L'émmanche est une pièce triangulaire posée en relief sur l'écu et prenant assise sur la pointe de l'écu pour se terminer en pointe au centre du bord supérieur de l'écu. Pièce brochante, l'émmanche forme un relief ombré à sénestre.

L'émanche peut accepter tous les meubles héraldiques.

Aucun émail particulier ne leur étant assigné, les émmanches peuvent accepter tous les émaux, fourrures ou métaux utilisés en Héraldique.
