C'est dans les archives du monastère de Durbon que Bruis, idem en français, est cité - nous sommes alors en l'an 1147 - et Bruscum fait l'objet de transactions en lien avec le monastère. Nous retrouvons Bruis sous la forme latine de Brosium en 1153 dans une bulle d'Eugène II°. Ce n'est qu'en 1516, que Bruis prend sa forme actuelle Bru-is. Les archives plus anciennes notent toujours ce toponyme en Bro-suffixe latin. Cette remarque nous ferait penser à un radical celtique signifiant pays.

Bruis serait lors de Pays de.... Nous retrouvons en gallois le mot Broyyd - le pays.
