En provençal haut-alpin, c'est Brezièrs et, en français, ce toponyme est devenu Bréziers

Dans ce toponyme, nous pouvons retrouver Bre - prononcé Bré - mot celtique signifiant hauteur, colline et qui est toujours utilisé sous une forme identique en breton, langue celtique.

La première forme attestée que nous ayons retrouvé date de l'an 1100 avec un Castrum Bricié. Nous retrouvons notre château en 1155 avec un Castru de Brezeriis qui se simplifie en 1298 avec un Brezii ; tous ces toponymes apparaissant dans les pouillés d'Embrun et de Sisteron.

Si le préfixe se comprend aisément comme écrit plus avant, le suffixe nous est resté abscons.
