Notre plus cher désir était d'aller charbonner à Malte.
Crac ! Contre-ordre...
C'est Navarin qui nous réapprovisionera. Mais à quel prix ! les grecs vendent 35 francs les 100 kg de patates ; c'est la guerre !
Reuter nous apprend une bonne nouvelle: les boches, qui avaient réussi à gagner du terrain près d'Ypres grâce à l'emploi d'explosifs asphyxiants, ont été repoussés par les nôtres. Tout le terrain perdu est reconquis. Bravo ! Vivent les Poilus ! Quel coup de main nous voudrions leur donner.
Hier, des petits oiseaux sont venus nous rendre visite. ils se sont installés sur les caisses qui servent de prisons à de jolis cochons roses et nous ont donné un ravissant concert. Ils avaient passé l'hiver en bretagne. Qui sait ! Tout l'équipage leur a fait fête. Nous avosn eu un instant l'espoir qu'ils continuent à vivre notre vie. Hélas ! le soir venu, ils ont repris leur envol.
Reverrai-je un jour les oiseaux ?
Embrasse bien pour moi Papa, Maman. Mais, surtout, ne leur donne pas connaissance de mes alarmes. Laisse-les croire que je navigue sur une mer d'huile, loin de tout danger. Si le sort nous désigne pour le Grand Voyage, ils apprendront bien assez tôt cette fâcheuse nouvelle. S'il est écrit que la famille doit perdre l'un ses siens dans la tourmente, n'est-il pas juste que cela soit moi ? Je ne laisserai ni femme ni enfants.
