Bourg-en-Bresse, en arpitan Bôrg, est attesté en l'an 1187 avec un de Burgo, puis en 1272 avec un Castrum et villa de burgo in Bressia. Le Borg de 1285 laisse place à un Bourg en Breysse en 1398. Le villa de l'année 1272 nous ferait pencher pour une ancienne villa gallo-romaine à l'origine de cette commune.

Les appellations utilisées pendant la période révolutionnaire sont assez cocasses. Nous y trouvons Bourg regénéré, Épi d'Ain, ou Épi d'Or ; appellations rapidement oubliées. La compréhension de ce toponyme ne pose aucune difficultés.
