L'immense majorité des toponymes de Bassan datent des temps les plus anciens, parfois du néolithique ou de la période préceltique, notamment les oronymes et hydronymes.

⌘ Étymologies et toponymes

Bassan, en occitan Baçan, est attesté en l'an 990 ainsi qu'en l'an 1207 avec un Bacianim villa, ecclesia.

Nous retrouvons ce toponyme sous la forme Basianum avec l'année 1210, puis 1129 nous indique que ce lieu est placé sous la protection de Saint Félix avec un Ecclesia S. Felicis de Baxano. Si l'année 1305 nous fournit un autre Baxano, les années 1323 et 1325 nous dévoilent un Bassanum. Ce toponyme toujours lu en latin sera noté Bassan dans un pouillé de l'année 1625.

Le Bacianim villa des X° et XIII° siècles nous confirme l'origine gallo-romaine de ce toponyme dérivant très certainement du nom du propriétaire d'un domaine rural situé en ces lieux ; sans doute un certain Bassius.
