À Dol, ainsi qu'à Pise, auprès des vieux remparts,
Sur une vaste place où croît une herbe épaisse,
Dominant des marais où planent les regards
La cathédrale antique et superbe se dresse

Ses tours, dont le granit par le temps s'est doré,
S'élève fièrement dans leurs lignes sévères.
De créneaux protecteurs le chœur est entouré ;
Les trèfles élégant font place aux meurtières.

Les évêques de Dol, en des jours périlleux,
Comme des chevaliers savaient porter le glaive.
À côté de Mercœur, sous la Ligue, l'un deux
Veillait sur les remparts et combattait sans trève.

Ils dorment aujourd'hui, couchés dans les tombeaux ;
Mais, comme aux temps anciens, on voit leurs armoiries,
Gardant leur souvenir, briller sur les vitraux
Et jeter des reflets dans les nefs assombries.

Un sentiment profond, grave et mystérieux,
Saisit le voyageur parcourant cette église ;
Il rève, malgré lui, d'un passé glorieux
Que cette cathédrale immense symbolise.

Il ne peut détacher ses yeux inassouvis
Du chevet où s'étale une fleur merveilleuse,
Ecrin de diamants, vitrail de paradis,
Où le vieux peintre a mis son âme radieuse.
