⌘ Étymologies et toponymes

Fondée vers 1555, Volgograd porte ce nom depuis 1961, date à laquelle la ville de Stalingrad fut renommée dans le cadre de la déstalinisation de l'Union Soviétique.

Ce toponyme est un néologisme unique en Russie et est formé par le mot Stalingrad, la Volga, et le suffixe -grad, mot de langues slaves, qui a signification identique à l'actuel mot russe Gorod, ville.

Le 10 novembre 1961, dans le cadre de la déstlinisation, le Soviet suprême de la RSFSR publia un décret renommant Stalingrad en Volgograd ; ce décret stipule que ce choix fut réalisé à la demande des habitants de la ville.
