De la Muse, ô digne interprète,
Pour votre départ tout s’apprête
Et mon cœur en est attristé.
Devant moi l’avenir est sombre,
Et mes jours, muets comme une ombre,
N’auront ni chaleur ni clarté.

Pourtant j’avais repris ma lyre !
Mais, si j’invoquais ce délire
Dont le vrai Poète est jaloux,
Si ma voix, qui chantait naguère,
Rejetant tout accord vulgaire,
Cherchait des sons, toujours plus doux,

C’est que vous vîntes m’apparaître,
Comme un pur rayon, qui pénètre
Jusqu’au fond d’un réduit obscur :
Claire et vivifiante aurore,
Dont le chaste reflet colore
De mon ciel le sévère azur.

Mais c’en est fait! L’heure est prochaine,
Où doit, sur la rive lointaine,
Briller ce flambeau qui me luit ;
Mais je vous perds !... Et ma pensée
Retombe inféconde et glacée :
Voici la nuit!... Voici la nuit...

Adieu donc, passagère flamme,
Clarté dont s’inspirait mon âme,
Jour radieux sans lendemain !
Je fléchis sous ma destinée
Et ma lyre, de pleurs baignée,
Échappe à ma tremblante main.
