Nous n'avons retrouvé multiples formes anciennes pour ce toponyme mais il est possible de signaler Widecovilla dont la date n'est fiabilisée, Witequoville pour l'année 1215 puis Videcovilla en 1280/ Les Cartes des Cassini nous présentent un toponyme identique à celui que nous connaissons actuellement.

Si le -villa est aisé à comprendre et désigne certainement une ferme originelle. Le Wide- ou Wite- n'a trouvé explication décisive et faire dériver ce toponyme d'un videcoq = bécasse - vu le nombre de bécasses à l'époque, nous semble trop aisé et surprenant. Une proposition datée de 1894 ferait dériver ce toponyme d'un vis de coq = visage de coq ; certainement surnom donné à un individu propriétaire en ces lieux.
