Trescléoux, en vivaro-alpin Trescléus, est cité dès 1075 dans le cartulaire de l'abbaye Saint Victor de Marseille sous la forme Trescleux.

Les différents formes observées - Triclivium, de Tribus Cliviis, Tréclivium, etc... rappellent toutes un toponyme d'origine latine pouvant rappeler l'existence de trois pentes sans doute suffisamment caractéristiques pour avoir signification en ce lieu.
