Sur les tours du château la neige étincelante
Fondait aux doux rayons d'un beau soleil d'hiver ;
Les arbres secouaient leur parure brillante,
Et la grive en chantant traversait le ciel clair.

Deux bergers d'Italie, er,rant dans la Bretagne,
Parurent sur le pont qui conduit au manoir.
L'étranger les avait chasses de leur montagne ;
Les enfants curieux se pressaient pour les voir.

Ils portaient le hautbois et la piva rustique
Sur leurs dos qu'abritaient des toisons de brebis.
Des airs napolitains sous le ciel d'Armorique
Éveillèrent bientôt les échos endormis.

Ils jouèrent longtemps, mais nulle châtelaine
Ne les encourageait d'un signe gracieux ;
Ils jouèrent encore et perdirent leur peine,
Car le château désert resta silencieux.

Les deux pifferari, comprenant leur méprise,
Rompirent en riant un morceau de pain noir,
Et, sous le porche assis à l'abri de la bise,
Ils écoutaient siffler les merles du manoir.

Comme eux si vous chantez vainement, ô poètes,
Rompez aussi le pain sans le mouiller de pleurs.
Ne restez point courbés sur vos lyres muettes,
Mais chantez seulement pour soulager vos coeurs.
