Sarreguemines, en lorrain Sarregeminn, est attesté pour la première fois dans les chartes de Pépin, duc d'Austrasie où il est fait mention d'un leg par Fulrac, conseiller de Pépin le Bref et de Charlemagne au bénéfice de l'abbaye d'Epternac - diocèse de Trêves. Nous sommes alors en l'an 706 et une partie de ce leg concerne une villa située au confluent de la Sarre et de la Bliese, sur un territoire qui deviendra Sarreguemines

En 706, Sarreguemines se retrouve sous la forme Gaimundas et Gainundias puis Gamunidia en 777. Ce n'est qu'en 1577 que la Sarre est spécifiée dans ce toponyme avec un Sargemünt qui se fixera alors jusqu'à nos jours.
