Sainte-Colombe, en vivaro-alpin Santa Colomba, doit le nom de sa commune à Sainte Colombe, martyre chrétienne du III° siècle.

Colombe, serait née à Saragosse, dans une famille païenne, sous le règne d'Aurélien - 270-275 après JC. Convertie au Chritianisme, elle migre en Gaule avec quelques compagnons. Baptisés à Vienne, en Dauphiné, ils furent dénoncés à l'administration romaine qui, en ces temps lointains, ne badinait pas avec les personnes remettant en cause le pouvoir divin de l'Empereur à Rome.
