⌘ Étymologies et toponymes

Saint Philibert, en breton Lokfiliberzh, doit son nom à Philibert de Tournus et de Noirmoutier.

La première citation connue de Saint-Philibert date de 1695 avec un Lophilibert que nous retrouvons aussi sous la forme Loc Philibert ce même siècle puis un Locphilipert au XVIII° siècle - en 1815, il deviendra Saint-Philibert en 1830.

Philibert est un prénom germanique signifiant très brillant, très célèbre. Honoré dans toute la Bretagne, Philibert est né en 617 ou 618 à Éauze dans le Gers. Tour à tour évêque d'Aires-sur-Adour en 620, il devient abbé de l'abbaye de Rebois en région de Meaux ; puis en 650, abbé de l'abbaye de Jumièges près de Rouen en 654. Il meurt en 685 à Noirmoutier, île où il avait fondé un monastère.
