En Bretagne, à Penvénan en département des Côtes d'Armor, Jozeb, habitant Kervarker - le francisé Kermarquer, n'ayant plus de tabac, souhaitait fumer une bonne pipe bourrée avec une fraîche agréable herbe à Nicot avant de se coucher. Ce soir-là, bien que le temps fut fort pluvieux, fort froid et que le vent souffla la mort, et bien que sa femme le lui déconseilla, Jozeb décida d'aller au bourg de Penvénan pour acheter ce précieux tabac qu'il chérissait.

Arrivé près du menhir de Kermarker, se dirigent vers le bourg, il omit de faire la rapide incantation qui le protégerait de la Gwarc'h - une sorcière rôdant près de Barr-an-Héol. Dépassé le menhir, il rencontra quatre hommes lugubres portant un cercueil ; cette rencontre nocturne l'intrigua, il se dissimula pour laisser passage mais éprouva forte douleur à la poitrine.

Tabac acheté, imaginant sa bonne pipe, il rentra heureux de son achat.

Arrivé chez lui, il vit les quatre hommes, immobiles, ayant posé le cercueil en travers de sa porte. Jozeb enjamba cet obstacle, trébucha et chuta: il était raide mort. Les servants de l'Ankou étaient venus pour lui...
