L'immense majorité des toponymes de Orcières datent des temps les plus anciens, parfois du néolithique ou de la période préceltique, notamment les oronymes et hydronymes.

Le Orcieras vivaro-alpin s'est francisé en cet Orcières que nosu connaissons maintenant.

Orcières se retrouve cité dans le cartulaire de l'abbaye de Durbon en 1166 sous sa forme latine Urseria que l'on pourra aisément rapprocher du français Oursière, tanière d'un ours...

Les siècles et leurs écrits nous font découvrir, toujours dans le même cartulaire, un Urtierium en 1192 ; puis autres documents nous découvrent un Orsere en 1265 et 1283 dans les archives de l'Abbaye de Boscodon. C'est en 1516 qu'un Orcière apparaît dans le rôle des décimes du Diocèse de Gap et sans ce S actuel.
