⌘ Étymologies et toponymes

Ongles, en provençal Onglas, est mentionné pour la première fois connue en 1073 et sous la forme latine Castrum d'Ungula. Le site originel du village est le hameau ruiné de Vière que les derniers habitants quittèrent dans l'entre deux guerres.

Certains voudraient faire dériver Ongles de la forme du relief où fut construit le village originel mais cela nous semble improbable. Ongles pourrait aussi dériver d'un nom de domaine gallo-romain implanté en ces lieux ; l'archéologie confortera cette hypothèse ou l'infirmera.
