Montrond, en provençal haut-alpin Montrond doit son toponyme au mont surplombant la commune. Sa forme arrondie et très caractéristique dans le paysage local ne pouvait qu'imposer ce toponyme à l'espace concerné puis à la commune.

Montrond apparaît en 1209 dans les archives de l'abbaye de Durbon où il est connu sous sa forme latine Mont Rontundus.
