⌘ Étymologies et toponymes

Montjay, en vivaro-alpin Montjai, est connu dès 1246, date à laquelle il est signalé sous une forme identique à celle que nous connaissons. C'eest en effet à cette date que nous pouvons lire un Mandemantum de Montjay dans une charte conservée aux archives de l'Isère. Le cartualire de l'Abbaye de Valbonne nous laissera lire un Monsjayi en 1317 puis 1360 pous laisser place à un nouveau Monjay en 1382 puis Monsjaye au XIV° siècle. Signalons aussi le Montjay dans le rôle des Décîmes de 1516 puis ce Montjai lisible dans l'almanach du Dauphiné de 1789.

Ce toponyme serait un Montjoie qui, selon la superbe étude de Paul Quentel, serait une éminence, sacrée ou non, de type cairn, servant à s'orienter et ne pas perdre la route en ces temps reculés où le GPS n'était pas encore inventé.
