Le Gâvre, en breton Ar C'havr et en gallo Le Gavr; nous est attesté dès le XXI° siècle avec un Gavrium silva que nous retrouvons dans le Cartulaire de Buzay, en l'actuelle commune de Rouans. En 1314; nous retrouverons un Degauvre Foresta puis un Le Gaure en 1630.

Une explication simple fait dériver ce toponyme du breton Gavr, ar C'havr - la chèvre mais, cette explication nous semblant simpliste, nous pencherions pour un droit féodal : hypothèse qui serait étayée par les privilèges importants que possédaient les habitants de cette paroisse en des temps lointains.
