L'immense majorité des toponymes de Lanvénégen datent des temps les plus anciens, parfois du néolithique ou de la période préceltique, notamment les oronymes et hydronymes.

Ils sont aussi légions à avoir été créés lors des grands défrichements qui ont fait naître nos paysages, nos hameaux, nos villages et communes actuelles. Images de l'Histoire, de ses hommes et de leurs langues, plusieurs strates linguistiques y sont visibles.

⌘ Étymologies et toponymes

Lanvénégen, en breton Lanejenn, est attesté en 1536 sous la forme Languenegean. Le Lan breton est un lieu consacré à un saint personnage qui, dans ce cas, serait une certain Guénégan. Ses hauts faits nous étant totalement inconnus, nous n'irons plus loin dans sa biographie.

Multiples saints bretons sont très certainement des chefs bretons, pentiern, qui ont marqué leur territoire en lui laissant leur nom. La christianisation, faisant feu de tous bois, les aura béatifiés dans son intérêt et les multiples lann, probablement entités administratives, se sont mués en ermitages innombrables habités par quelques saints personnages bien utiles.

Nous ne retrouvons que peu de formes anciennes pour ce toponyme. Outre la forme de 1536, nous n'avons qu'un Lenmenezen en 1630.
