⌘ Étymologies et toponymes

Kounachir - Кунашир est un toponyme provenant des mots aïnous Kunna - noir et Shiri - île ; ce toponyme s'expliquant probablement par les dominants tons sombres du sol et des forêts ainsi que par la masse obscure du Tyatya, volcan et point culminant l'île avec ses 1819 mètres ; c'est d'ailleurs ce volcan que vous retrouvez sur le blason de l'île.

Japonaise ou russe, l'île ne changea pas de toponyme.
