La lune à la fenêtre
Regarde dans la chambre basse et vieille.
Voici l'horloge, et là le lit de Pierre,
Et l'on entend dormir les deux jumelles.
Un taret crisse aux lames du plancher.

Chassant au loup, le vent court la montagne.
Dans le sapin, derrière le branchage,
Hérissement de ces pesantes rames
Que le vent jette avant comme des bras,
La lune monte, essuyée des nuages.
On croit d'abord que c'est elle qui marche
Et puis on voit que ce sont ces brouillards.

Mais leurs traînées glissent et s'efillochent,
La dénudant. Toute seule, plus haut,
Grosse comme une grosse goutte d'eau,
Brille une étoile au mitan du carreau.
On aperçoit la ravine et les roches
Où des pins déchiquetés se cramponnent,
Parmi les trous que hantent les blaireaux.

Mouillée d'argent, cette gorge s'en va
Vers les plateaux d'airelle et de gentiane
Où le vent meugle a la Pierre-du-Diable.
Les pins et le ruisseau grondent en bas
Là où, dit-on, vivaient lutins et fades.
Sait-on tout ce qu'enferme la montagne
Et le secret de sa lande sauvage ?

Dans la nuitée, autour des vieilles fermes,
Quelles choses mauvaises se démènent ?
Le vent secoue la porte et la fenêtre.
Puis la Chasse Royale en ces ténèbres
Roule en ruées d'abois, de cris, de chaînes.
Ah ! L'on ne devrait pas prêter l'oreille
À ces folies de l'ouragan funèbre !

Ô nuit livrée aux malheurs et aux sorts,
Toute de bruits et de souples dehors,
Ainsi qu'au glas la vigile des morts.
Entendez-vous ces râles à la porte ?
Mais la fatigue à la fin est plus forte.
Dans la tête pesante se désordonnent
Les pensers noirs et Louise s'endort.

Sous des rochers dont les muftes avancent,
Au défilé plein de lune et de vent,
Passe à grand bruit le peuple de la lande.
