Approche comme on fait près du chevet sanglant,
Magnifique et sacré d'un blessé qui repose.

J'ai tant souffert, vois-tu, et tant désespéré,
Que si je te voyais maintenant apparaître
Au logis sans espoir où j'ai longtemps pleuré,
Je ne sais si mes yeux pourraient te reconnaître.

Ah ! Songe que le jour où tu viendrais soudain,
Il faudrait lentement soulever ton beau voile,
Afin que, par degrés, ma sombre nuit s'étoile
Pour m'apprendre à monter le radieux chemin.

Tu parlerais tout bas comme en un sanctuaire
Où la douce pénombre invite à la ferveur
Et comme un séraphin tu dirais à mon cœur
Les chers mots oubliés par ma douleur trop fière.

Puis, sous le lourd fardeau du chagrin très obscur
Qui faisait de ma vie une longue détresse,
En effleurant mon front d'une chaste caresse,
Tu laisserais flotter ton écharpe d'azur.

Alors m'abandonnant à la douce rencontre,
A genoux devant toi comme devant un Dieu
Dans le ravissement j'attendrais que tu montres
Ce que tu m'apportais dans ton grand manteau bleu !
