Natif de La Plaine-sur-Mer en Loire-Atlantique, en 1838, Joseph Rousse est homme aux cartes multiples. Avocat au barreau de Nantes, homme politique, historien, banquier qui sera ruiné par la faillite de la Banque Rousselot, Joseph Rousse est aussi poète remarquable.

Patriote breton, il nous laissera approximativement 300 poèmes inspirés par l'Art, la nature, la mort, la religion ou l'Amitié.

Collaborateur de la revue L'Hermine, membre du Parnasse breton contemporain, qualifié de poète impressioniste, il entretient correspondance avec les Félibres, en Provence. Jusqu'à sa mort, en 1909, il restera fidèle à son pays - la Bretagne, et à sa Foi - le catholicisme.

La hulotte se plaît au milieu des ruines,
Sur les remparts chargés de lierres et d'épines,
Les colombiers déserts, les tours, les vieux clochers.
Elle aime au bord des flots les antres des rochers,
Les chênes dont l'hiver épargne le feuillage,
Les sapins isolés dans la lande sauvage.
Elle chante la nuit, et ses gémissements, ?
Doux pour quelques rêveurs, attristent les passants.

Ainsi que la hulotte, amante des ruines,
Je vais cherchant partout dans les plaines voisines
Les antiques débris et les vieux souvenirs,
Et, quand j'ai cru toucher le but de mes désirs,
Je reviens tout joyeux, rêvant de poésie.
A ce qui chante en moi je veux donner la vie ;
Je prends mon humble luth ; mais je sais que mes chants
Ne seront écoutés que des rêveurs souffrants.
