L'Épine, en vivaro-alpin L'Espina, est attestée pour la première fois connue en 988 dans les archivse de l'Abbaye de Cluny ou ce toponyme se retrouve sous la forme Spina Villa qui nous rappelle l'existence d'une villa gallo-romaine ayant probablement été le noyau originel de la commune actuelle.

Spina, mot latin, signifie épine. Pourrions-nous donc imaginer une villa gallo-romaine utilisant des haies de prunelliers - plante épineuse - pour délimiter ses parcelles ou une terre favorable à la croissance de ces épineux ? Nous ne pouvons y répondre.
