Le soleil s'est couché ce soir sans un nuage.
Du seuil fané de ma maison,
J'entends les flots bercer le sommeil du rivage
De leur éternelle chanson.

L'odeur des orangers donne une âme à la brise.
Et, tandis que tombe le soir,
Je rêve... Je regarde une colonne grise
Qui s'élève d'un chaume noir.

Et la fumée, ainsi qu'une blanche prière,
Monte en tremblant vers le ciel bleu,
Laborieux encens que la pauvre chaumière
Voudrait exhaler jusqu'à Dieu.

Elle monte, elle monte et son nuage augmente,
S'élargissant sous le ciel pur...
On dirait maintenant que la masse fumante
Veut s'emparer de tout l'azur...

Mais voici qu'un frisson de vent trouble l'espace !
Et le beau nuage flottant
Soudain s'effrite... Un tourbillon... Et tout s'efface,
Tout disparaît en un instant.

Et je reste à songer aux trompeuses chimères
Que forment nos coeurs si souvent.
Je vois naître et grandir nos vouloirs éphémères
Pour s'écrouler au moindre vent.

Pareil à la fumée est le désir des hommes;
Comme elle, il veut l'immensité.
Et scrutant l'avenir, aveugles que nous sommes,
Nous n'en voyons que la beauté.

Chaque jour, nous laissons dans le temps et l'espace
Monter notre rêve géant...
Et quand il a grandi, quelque zéphir qui passe
D'un souffle le jette au néant !
