Charix, idem en arpitan, nous est attesté dès l'année 1145 puis en 1259 avec un Carisimium. L'an 1350 verra un In Charisio, devenu Chary en 1356 et révélant la prononciation de ce toponyme.

Les visites pastorales nous laissent voir un Chariz: église parrochiale Saint Aman pour l'année 1613 et le cartulaire lyonnais nous offre un Capellanus de Charis en 1259.
