L'immense majorité des toponymes de Champdor datent des temps les plus anciens, parfois du néolithique ou de la période préceltique, notamment les oronymes et hydronymes.

C'est en 1169 que nous pouvons découvrir la première forme toponymique ancienne de Champdor ; nous le découvrons sous la forme Candobrium dans le délimité des terres de la chartreuse de Meyriat. Il sera confirmé en 1198 dans le recueil des Chartes de l'Abbaye de Cluny sous la forme De Chandoro puis, dans mêmes archives, sous la forme De Chandouro en 1198. Nous pourrons aussi lire, dans les archives de l'Ain, un De Candolbrio en 1200, 1210, 1211, 1213 et 1241. En 1222, et toujours dans ces archives, nous pourrons trouver un De Candobrio, De Chandouro en 1234, 1248, 1259, 1314. Les archives de la Côte-d'Or nous dévoilent un Apud Campumdubrium 1493 suivi d'un Champ-Douros en 1563 et Chandores en 1650. Chandore en Bugey nous est visible en 1670 puis Champdore en 1790 dans le Dénombrement de Bourgogne. Signalons le Champdor indiqué sur les cartes des Cassini.

Expliquer ce toponyme avec un confortable Champ d'or est s'engager dans une impasse car, dans la forme toponymique originelle, nous aurions eu un latin Aurum = Or et un Campus ou mot latin en rapport avec les champs. Il nous semble plus logique de rapprocher de toponyme d'un celtique Bre, Bri = butte, colline, tertre et du mot - toujours celtique, Cando, cann, candi = blanc, brillant, éclatant ; mot toujours usité en breton avec un Kann = blanc ou en sanscrit avec un Candra = brillant.
