Chaleins nous apparaît sous la forme latine de Chalings dès l'an 984 dans un Cartulaire du Lyonnais. Nous le retrouvons en 1182 avec un Chalens noté sur des parchemins concernant les Dombes ; puis un pouillé lyonnais nous dévoile un Chalenz en l'an 1250. Nous verrons d'autres formes dont Ecclesia de Chalengo, Chalein, Chaleyns, Chalenz, Chalains.

Ce toponyme semble dériver du burgonde Calingos - les Calingi, nom dérivé du nom Calo - homme froid, flegmatique.
