Bouligneux est attesté dès l'année 885 - pour le première fois connue dans les écrits, et se retrouve dans un document de Charles III, dit le Gros, roi carolingien. Nous retrouvons ce toponyme dans ce passage In pago lugdunensi, vicumque Ambariacum atque Belliniacum.

Les chartes de Cluny nous font connaître un Boliniaco, que nous retrouverons en 1250 dans un pouillé de Lyon sous la forme Buligneu, avec ou sans Z.
